  • Bradninch.
Church of St. Dionysius. The present church stands on the site of much earlier buildings. The rood screen [plate 27a] was erected about 1450, was painted in 1527, and restored in 1853. On twelve of the lower panels are paintings of Sybils [ancient Greek prophetesses]. No other church has such a complete set. The screen is complete with groining and cornices; the cresting is modern. There are tilting shields in the tracery, and the pier casings retain ancient statuettes under canopies. The original north parclose screen, which is older than the rood screen, now fitted to the tower arch, has paintings of our Lord on the Cross and figures of saints.

  • Chepstow Castle
Views from a visit to Chepstow Castle The foundations for the castle were [most likely] laid in 1067, the year following William the Conqueror's coronation in England. It is probably the first Medieval stone-built castle in Britain,

  • Cullompton - Church of St.Andrews
The present building dates from 1430 A glorious wagon roof coloured in blue, crimson and gold runs the entire length of the church, reinforced with iron tie rods inserted by William Froude, a Great Western Railway engineer in 1859. Cullompton Church is unique throughout England, and possibly throughout Christendom, in possessing to the present day the original carved wooden base of the medieval rood. It is sometimes called the "Golgotha" because it is carved with skulls and rocks and crossbones.

  • Fairford
"The overall plan of the windows is probably due to Richard Fox, Lord Privy Seal and Bishop of Durham, later of Winchester. The glass was made between 1500 and 1517 under the direction of the King's Glazier, Barnard Flower, largely in his workshops at Westminster. A number of the glaziers and glass painters came from the Netherlands. Releading has taken place at various times and there are signs of patchwork repairs. During the Reformation (about 1550) and in Cromwellian times some of the lights may have been whitewashed over; in the latter period some of the heads of figures were probably removed."

  • Sampford Peverell

In the porch is the following inscription: The most noble Margaret Beaufort Countess of Richmond and Derby, mother of King Henry the 7th, and founder of St. John's and Christ's Colleges in Cambridge, added at her own cost A.D. 1495, this porch and aisle, to the ancient parish church of Sampford Peverell, being then the Lady of the Manor. • Tiverton
    Church of St.Peter
This is where Katherine youngest daughter of Edward IV is buried as Countess of Devon. A chapel was built by the Courtney familyto enshrine their tombs. Now nothing remains of it. Ruins of the Courtney's castle are adjacent to the church.
John Greenway, a sucsesful cloth merchant added a chantry chapel to the church. Carvings reflecting the wooltrade that brought the wealth required adorn the chapel.

  • Trull
    All Saints Church

The original church is thought to date from the middle of that century; the base of the tower (the oldest part of the present church) dates from those times when the church consisted of chancel, nave and tower. The south aisle is of the 14th century and the north aisle a century later The Pulpit and the Bench Ends are special treasures of this church.

  • Warwick
The home of Thomas Oken in the early sixteenth century now a Tea Room was our first goal. Oken, believed to be the richest man in Warwick at the time, made a fortune dealing in wool and woven fabrics.
Then on to The Collegiate Church of St. Mary with its Beauchamp Chapel. This was my second visit to the chapel and confirmed my personal view that this is the most supreme example of any such dedicated chapel in England. After that on to the Lord Leycester Hospital followed by a visit to a private medieval House in Mill street sill in use as a home. Finally visiting the Mill Gardens adjacent to the Castle by the Avon.
