Our meeting for this day has been cancelled to enable members to attend the Festival lectures at the City Museum, Gloucester.

SATURDAY 11 APRIL

THE WEST COUNTRY, SOUTH-WEST MIDLANDS AND SOUTH-EAST WALES IN THE WARS OF THE ROSES

Illustrated talk by Professor Peter Fleming . Professor Fleming will suggest events in the region, but particularly in and around Bristol, Coventry and Shrewsbury in the late 1450’s and 1460’s, were crucial to the initial triumph of the Yorkists. The talk is based on research into the local politics of the Welsh March and the neighbouring English region, and seeks to place local, urban political history in the context of wider national events.

SATURDAY 9  MAY

THE DISCOVERY OF ENGLAND IN THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY

Talk by Professor Nicholas Orme who will discuss the early antiquaries of that century who have left us their notes on English topography and history, notably William Worcestre, who was born in 1415, and travelled southern England making notes on buildings and

people, especially in Bristol and Gloucestershire.

TEWKESBURY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL

We will be promoting the Richard III Society and the Gloucester Branch by retaining a display area, in conjunction with the Worcestershire Branch, in the Main Marquee.  The Worcestershire Branch will operate on Saturday 11 July (to be confirmed).

BLANCHE MORTIMER STUDY DAY

A whole day event focussing on the life of Blanche Mortimer. The day will be based in Hellens and Much Marcle [ see separate programme for details ]

Update on Annette’s latest research on Richard as Protector and Constable.

Please note this is a special talk which will be facilitated by the Worcestershire Branch but open to Gloucester Branch members. The venue will be advised later.

TIM PORTER STUDY DAY : MEDIEVAL WOMEN

Tim will provide an overview of women in medieval society and then focus on three key figures, Margery Kempe, Julian of Norwich and Margaret Paston [ see separate programme sheet for details ]

BRANCH AGM followed by a talk RICHARD III AND THE DISSOLUTION OF YORKISM

Keith Stenner will propose the actions taken by Richard in the Summer of 1483 ultimately undermined his regime and led directly to his downfall.

Festive food and drink by way of an informal introduction to the Christmas season.

PLEASE NOTE :  ALL MEETINGS, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED, WILL BE HELD AT THE EMMANUEL HALL, FAIRFIELD PARADE, LECKHAMPTON, GL53 7PJ

Meetings commence at 2.30 pm with the exception of field visits which are by arrangement. However, please note, our meeting on Saturday 9th May will begin at 2:00 pm.  As agreed at the AGM, for meetings where there is an outside speakers a charge of £3 will be made to offset costs [ £5 for non-Branch members ].
